課程概述

This course trains students to develop the ability to construct autonomously reading responses that are both aesthetic and interpretive. In addition to analytical skills at reading the three major genres of literature, including short story, poetry and drama, the students will also learn how historical contexts are significant in appreciating a wide spectrum of meanings generated from a text. By the end of the course, each student is expected to demonstrate both intermediate skills of analyzing literary works in a process of reading and proficient synthesizing capacity of relating a text to contexts and other texts.

課程目標
By the end of the course, each student is expected to demonstrate both intermediate skills of analyzing literary works in a process of reading and proficient synthesizing capacity of relating a text to contexts and other texts.

課程要求
• Finish reading the assigned readings before coming to the class.
• Hand in the reading responses in time.
• Participate in class and group discussions collaboratively.
• Attendance and participation
• Anyone who misses the class more than three times will not pass this course. You are encouraged to avoid chronic lateness. Anyone who misses more than one hour of the class will be counted as absent half a time.
• You are responsible for being in time for tests. No makeup tests will be given unless under very extreme circumstances.

Reading Responses:
Each week you are required to hand in a written response of two or three paragraphs in English online. It is not to be read by the teacher, but serves as a log of your own reading and a preparation for in-class discussion. As long as you do it, you receive 100 for it each time. If it is either not done in time or poorly executed, you will receive 0 instead. Here are some heuristic questions for reading responses:
1. Did you like the text? Did you find it interesting, entertaining? Why or why not?
2. Regardless of whether you liked the text, what do you consider worth discussing? Which questions could we try to answer? What topics should be explored?
3. Regardless of whether you like the text, and regardless of which issues you think might be discussed, is the text literature? Why or why not?
Questions taken from Mark Gellis’ “Master Questions and the Teaching of Literature.” In Inquiry & the Literary Text: Constructing Discussions in the English Classroom. Ed. James Holden and John S. Schmit.
Class and Group Discussions:
I urge you to be
• prepared to contribute, even if this means overcoming natural shyness.
• willing to ask questions and seek clarification.
• honest in expressing your feelings and opinions.
• ready to reconsider your judgments in the light of further evidence.
• familiar with the work you are studying.
